Oh, the vegan food you’ll eat in Key West!
I love to research vegan restaurants before traveling to a new destination. Especially, since I eat a mostly plant-based diet! This way, I have an idea of what to look forward to, and I know there are some wonderful culinary adventures ahead!
I was pleasantly surprised that every restaurant I had on my list blew away my expectations.
I love to try local vegan favorites and make my trip a mix of healthy eating and sampling the yummy (key lime pie) delectables that a region is known for. Here are my favorite healthy, plant-based finds in Key West. Plus, some that are more indulgent!
The Cafe
Top of my list! The Cafe is a little restaurant in the middle of town on Southard Street, offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner. When you walk inside the first thing you’ll notice is the colorful decor and a super happy greeting. When you’re looking for vegan restaurants in Key West, this is a must-visit!
It’s a pretty small place with cozy little tables that make you want to sit down and stay awhile.
Their menu is jam-packed with choices, ranging from healthy and light to heartier entrees.
You’ll find plenty of plant-based and vegan options here! Avocado Chickpea Toast, Veggie Egg Scramble, and Smoked Salmon Benedict are a few outstanding breakfasts to mention.
For lunch or dinner, you’ll choose from Mahi-mahi, noodle bowls, sandwiches, stir-frys, and more! I’ve dined here many times because there are so many vegan entrees to try. And I still haven’t tried them all!
Date & Thyme
Date & Thyme is another fantastic choice for breakfast or lunch! They’re a small, super cute, organic food spot with a market too!
Date & Thyme is the perfect place to pick up some extra vegan, healthy snacks to take with you for later.
Date & Thyme is in a converted old gas station, so there’s a lot of character to enjoy while you’re relaxing with your plant-based or vegan lunch.
Smoothies, wraps, and burgers (veggie) are all healthy and delicious choices!
There are even extra nutritional “boosts” you can add such as tumeric, hemp or chia seeds, vegan protein, and others. You’ll leave Date & Thyme feeling so good about your choices in vegan food and health! Especially your vegan choices while in Key West!
Moondog Cafe & Bakery
Showing off more bright, colorful Key West decor, Moondog Cafe is a perfect little casual spot for healthy, vegan food.
They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner with vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options. All of their bakery items are made fresh and on-premises!
This is a charming spot to sit outside on one of the deck areas under the trees and enjoy the funky vibe of Key West.
Start the day with Veggie Quiche, or Norman’s Huevos Rancheros with a vegan pastry on the side. Or, stop in for lunch or dinner for Wok-Fired Brussel Sprouts and a Quinoa Salad with roasted beets, apple, and toasted almonds!
Tofu, Mahi, Shrimp, or Steak can be added to many of the salads so it’s up to you!
They have a delicious veggie burger made with legumes, broccoli, carrots, mushrooms, scallions, and sunflower seeds on grilled ciabatta.
Plus, a complete list of burgers that are not for the veggie eater. Moondog Cafe is a very special healthy spot not to be missed on a trip to Key West!

Sugar Apple Cafe

They always use the freshest, organic ingredients to create delicious, healthy meals for their guests. You’ll find healthy smoothies, organic juices, and a great list of vegan and plant-based entrees and sandwiches to choose from.
You might be in the mood for a hearty veggie burger, or an “FLT” which is made with soy “fakin’ bacon”, lettuce, and tomato on whole-grain bread.
Salads are always a great choice, and they’ve got some creative selections such as Pesto Salad or Sun-dried Tomato Salad.
Sugar Apple Market carries popular organic products and foods so you can do some vegan shopping too! They encourage holistic living and good nutrition. They are the best vegan market in Key West!

Santiago’s Bodega
With some amazing salads and seafood tapas on the menu, Santiago’s can be a healthy choice! It’s one of my top favorite restaurants in Key West and I always make it a point to go when I’m in Key West!
There’s just something special about sitting at the bar drinking a glass of wine, biting into tomato-basil bruschetta, a trio of hummus with warm pita slices, or Patatas Bravas that makes my day!
This top Key West restaurant is a little better for vegetarians and meat-eaters but can certainly be enjoyed by someone following a vegan diet too. Be sure to let your server know, and ask them for the best up-to-date vegan suggestions!
You’ll definitely need a reservation to dine here, even to sit at the bar.
Key West is Quirky and Lovable
Roosters sneak around town any time of the day, there are colorful buildings, day drinking, rum tasting, and fun-loving people with great stories.
This is all a part of Key West’s charm.
History is also abundant including Ernest Hemingway’s house and museum, the lighthouse museum, and Pan Am’s first office. You’ll come across lots of self-expression in creative menus, pastel art, and special opportunities to just sit, relax, and enjoy the sunset.
